Mommying 101: The Importance of Physical Play for Kids & Toddlers

physical play

We as parents are always worried about the development of our kids. The first 5 years of the kid’s lives are the most important when it comes to physical as well as mental development.

I have noticed that as parents we are sometimes ignorant about “physical play” because of the comfort of technology available to us. Rather than physical play, we offer them video games, mobiles, play stations and what not.

Children nowadays are trained in reading, writing, and other indoor activities but we should understand these things are bound to fall in place (because of the schooling). So, besides making them accustomed to reading and writing, we should also concentrate on the physical activities of our kids.

A recent study says that a kid’s physical education and involvement in early years is just as necessary as their intellectual development for their success later.

Physical play for kids is utmost important in daily life. Not only to keep them active through the day but also for their overall development.

  • Babies should be encouraged to be physically active since birth. (Play gyms to your rescue)

  • No TV or screen time for kids till 2-3 years of age at least. Or strictly under moderation.

  • Kids aged 1-5 years should be active for at least 3 hours a day. (Spread through the entire day).

When I now know how much physical activities are important for my kid, I took it as a pledge to keep baby Y engaged accordingly.

But keeping the scorching weather of Ahmedabad in mind, we took baby Y out for an amazing play date to “Funky Monkeys” on this Father’s Day.

And all three of us had a gala time.

They have designed the play area keeping safety and kids in mind. They have taken the safety of the kids and skill development of kids into consideration while working on the design of the play area.

Children will do their best and enjoy if they feel secure. They can climb, crawl, pretend play, create amazing things through imagination, explore and what not if they feel secure.

Baby Y literally went Bananas here at Funky Monkeys. See for yourself:

And we spent the best Father’s Day ever where Baby Y & his father connected on another level.

They also have multi-player systems which offer a developing approach to physical challenges with sensory stimulation which develops confidence and imaginative skills of kids.

Gross motor and locomotor skills in kids can be developed by:

  • Walking

  • Balancing

  • Holding different things confidently.

  • Understanding different textures.

  • Knowing when to walk, run, stop.

  • Judging when is the need to stop.

  • Climbing stairs

  • Sliding with confidence

  • Enjoying themselves

Funky monkeys have taken care of all the skill development mentioned above and have many activities accordingly for different age groups.

Coming here with baby Y was a fun-filled experience, but as a parent, I came across some benefits of physical play that I was unaware of…

Benefits of including Physical Play in your kid’s daily routine:

  • Building their confidence.

  • Building their problem-solving ability.

  • Learning complex structures and dealing with them.

  • Building sharp memory.

  • Increases mental well-being

  • Improves social skills.

  • Teaches sharing.

  • Helps with fundamental movements.

  • Strengthens muscles and bones.

  • Improves immunity.

  • Improves the hand and eye coordination.

  • Helps maintain a healthy weight.

  • Overall helps in a healthy growth and development.

Wrap Up:

It is our job as parents to make sure our kid is getting enough knowledge for a proper physical as well as mental growth.

And I personally think that sometimes because of our laziness or no reason, in particular, physical play is ignored and our kids face the consequences in the later stage of their lives.

The best way to get your kid accustomed to physical play is for them to see you in action and enjoying the outdoors because our kids learn what we teach them or what they see around themselves.

So, go out & play with your kids today! Don’t worry about the bruises because they don’t stay for a long time but the memories do.

Tell us your favorite physical activity or physical play with your kid in the comment section. I would love to try those activities with baby Y.
